It seems the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) and controversy go hand-in-hand. The LDCA, an affiliated body of the Punjab Cricket Association, has embroiled in another controversy, perpetuating a disturbing trend that has plagued the organisation for the last few years.

The LDCA has issued a demand notice to the Jain International Trade Organization (JITO), Ludhiana Chapter Foundation seeking Rs 2 lakh for hosting a cricket tournament at the association’s ground at GRD Academy on Hambran road, currently on lease with the LDCA.

The LDCA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the GRD Academy and runs its coaching/training centre, there. This drastic increase in fees has raised eyebrows, as the same organisation was charged only Rs 50,000 for the same (week-long) event during the last three years.

In a letter dated September 232, sent by the LDCA to JITO Ludhiana Chapter Foundation, the latter has been requested to transfer Rs 2 lakh into the bank account of Ludhiana District Cricket Association in order to host its annual cricket tournament at GRD Academy ground as donation to support and enable the association in contributing to promote the game.

The JITO Foundation has expressed shock and disappointment at the sudden increase. “We are shocked by the exorbitant demand. This is unfair and any decision in this regard will be taken at the JITO Ludhiana Chapter committee,” said a member of the foundation.

The LDCA receives significant grant amount regularly from the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), including ground maintenance expenses and salaries for ground staff, besides charging fee from the aspiring cricketers of different age groups which is more than sufficient to run its activities for cricket development.

When contacted, Satish Mangal, president, LDCA, said they needed finances to maintain the ‘facility’ and for upgradation of infrastructure for the benefit of cricket players.

Amid controversy, Kawaljit Singh, director, GRD Academy, said the MoU clearly outlined LDCA’s responsibilities such as ground repairs, its maintenance and upkeep in addition to ensure no damage or alterations without prior approval. The agreement expires in March, 2025, he informed.
