NO PLACE FOR CRIMINALS

There is no place for criminals in Khanna. Our men and women in the field are on the prowl to catch all those who indulge in crime, with focus on drugs. Besides punitive action, we are also spearheading a sustained campaign to raise awareness and educate the masses against drugs and rehabilitate addicts and small-time peddlers while targeting the big fish. — Amneet Kondal, Khanna SSP

Adopting zero tolerance against drugs, the cops have arrested 256 smugglers with 3,508 kg contraband, traced 683 criminal cases and caught 155 proclaimed offenders (PO) on the run for a long time.

Khanna Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal told The Tribune here on Friday that the district police have stepped up its ongoing war against drugs and all stops have been pulled to catch the smugglers and peddlers, recover the contraband and in turn prevent narcotics-related crime.

She said a sustained campaign was also underway against gangsters, history sheeters, notorious elements, liquor smugglers and proclaimed offenders, who were evading the law for a long time.

SSP Amneet disclosed that the anti-drugs drive had led to the arrest of 256 smugglers in 170 cases registered under various Sections of the NDPS Act and recovered almost 3,508 kg of contraband and intoxicant pills and capsules.

While the maximum seizure was of 3,466 kg poppy husk, 26 kg opium and 16 kg ganja were also among major recoveries. Other varieties of confiscated drugs included 546 gram heroin, 88 gram smack, 45 gram charas, 31 gram narcotic powder, and 1.82 lakh pills, capsules, injections and syrups that were misused for intoxication.

Of the total 797 criminal cases registered under various crime heads during the past six months, police also cracked 683, with the arrest of 1,007 criminals.

The action against illegal use of arms and ammunition led to the arrest of 29 criminals in 11 cases under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the IPC, with the recovery of 30 pistols, 24 cartridges, and 29 magazines.

Rampant illegal liquor smuggling was also checked with the arrest of 47 smugglers in 42 cases under relevant sections of the Excise Act and recovery of 39.5 litre illicit liquor, 1,120 litre licit liquor, and 1,580 litre lahan.

As many as 155 POs were apprehended, while the names of 53 were deleted from the records, following due legal procedure. Besides, 21 history sheeters were also caught.

Cracking the whip against property crime, the district police had traced 76 cases of crime against property with the recovery of stolen property worth Rs 91.24 lakh, which included stolen vehicles, snatched/stolen mobile phones, stolen gold/silver ornaments and looted cash.

The analysis of recovery and disposal of drugs shows poppy husk remains the most popular contraband in Khanna. The seizure of 3,466 kg poppy husk was the maximum among all types of recovered contrabands during the last six months.

The SSP said: “There is no place for criminals in Khanna district. Our men and women in the field are on the prowl to catch hold of all those who indulge in any crime, with a special focus on drugs. Besides punitive action, we are also spearheading a sustained campaign to raise awareness and educate the masses against drugs and rehabilitate addicts and small-time peddlers while targeting the big fish.”
