Handicraft mela at PAU turns heads
Handicraft Mela, organised at the Faculty Club of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), evoked an overwhelming response from the teachers, employees and students of the agri-varsity. The mela presented an aesthetic view of the handicrafts, handwoven by the PAU trained skilled entrepreneurs.
The Dean, College of Community Science Dr (Mrs) Kiran Bains, who was the chief guest, lauded the skilled artisans for changing the landscape of their families through socio-economic upliftment. Women and youths, although unemployed and uneducated, should not sit free or wait for the right moment, but rather contribute via these subsidiaries which were a solution to the unemployment and financial instability, she observed. The surging demand for all-time handicrafts of any state had escalated the business of the entrepreneurs due to their growing preference for the decorative purpose or any other use such as wall hangings, cushion covers, bed covers, table cloths, suits and dupattas, purses and bags, shagun covers, etc.
Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director Students’ Welfare, while appreciating the artistic eye of the entrepreneurs, said that these handicraft items would be available for the public after youth festival.
The President of the Faculty Club Dr Harmeet Singh Khingra, while delivering his welcome address, said that the mela, in which 30 skilled entrepreneurs exhibited their items, aimed at bridging the gap between the producer and the consumer, the skilled worker and the spectator.
