Farmers urged to avoid burning stubble at Punjab Agricultural University Kisan Club camp

Agricultural experts focused on paddy straw management and cultivation of rabi crops during the monthly training camp of Kisan Club at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. A total of 95 farmer members attended the training camp, held under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education.

Dr Jagroop Kaur Sekhon, agricultural engineer, stressed upon curbing stubble burning to check air pollution that blanketed the entire region with smoke. She impressed upon the farmers to use PAU Happy Seeder, Surface Seeder, Smart Seeder, PAU Super SMS, mould board plough, baler, mulcher, etc, for in-situ and ex-situ residue management.

Dr Maninder Kaur, an expert of plant breeding and genetics (PBG), explained the agronomic practices for the successful cultivation of wheat crop. “Sow recommended wheat varieties and avoid cultivating unrecommended varieties to avert economic loss,” she advised the farmers. Further, she suggested sowing wheat varieties PBW 826, PBW 824, PBW 803, Sunehri (PBW 766), Unnat PBW 343, DBW 222, DBW 187, HD 3226, Unnat PBW 550, PBW 725, and PBW 677 under timely sown irrigated conditions. “Cultivate PBW 2 Zn, PBW 1 Zn, PBW RS 1 and PBW 1 Chapati for special purpose; Unnat PBW 550 and PBW 677 in sub-mountain regions; and PBW 771, PBW 757 and PBW 752 for late sowing,” she added.

Dr Ruma Devi, vegetable science expert, suggested net house cultivation of vegetables for safe and good health. Since vegetable prices were going up, it was important to grow vegetables in the household kitchen garden, she observed. Further, she shared the cultivation practices of carrot, radish, tomato, brinjal, cucumber and onion.
