Players of Ludhiana district began their campaign on a positive note scripting victories in the men and women sections of the 74th Senior Punjab Basketball Tournament, being organised in the memory of Arjuna awardee Gurdial Singh Malhi at Gureh village, near Jagraon, in the district on Monday.

Ludhiana men outplayed Fatehgarh Sahib 60-41 while their counterparts got the better of Patiala 51-31. In other matches, Sangrur (men) defeated Patiala 83-68 and Fatehgarh Sahib (women) scored a wafer thin one-point margin win (50-49) against Mansa.

A total of 22 teams, 11 each in men and women sections, are competing in the championship. The Ludhiana Basketball Academy (LBA) are the reigning champions in the men and women sections as well.

Navneet Singh Bains, SSP, Ludhiana Rural, was the chief guest at the inaugural function while former international star basketball player and Jagraon SP Parminder Singh, DSP Varinder Singh Khosa and sarpanch Navjot Singh were guests of honour.

Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, extended welcome to the dignitaries and wished participating teams good luck.
