Dayanand Medical College & Hospital resident wins award for AI research in surgery

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to have a significant impact on the future of medicine. It has the potential to enhance healthcare outcomes by improving clinical trials, medical diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Sonalika Sharma, a resident from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital’s Department of Surgery, has won the prestigious Nabeel Ibrahim Memorial Prize for Best Original Hernia Surgery Presentation at the Australia New Zealand (ANZ) Hernia Annual Conference 2024 in Brisbane.

Her presentation on ‘AI-Powered SSI Surveillance', a project developed under the guidance of Dr Ashvind Bawa, Professor of Surgery, secured first place and won a cash prize of $1000 along with free registration to the European Hernia Society Cadaver Lab next year.

Another senior resident, Dr Tanveer Kaur, also presented valuable research on AI in NPWT (negative pressure wound therapy) and hernia surgery. He showcased the potential of AI to improve surgical outcomes.

The DMCH principal, Dr GS Wander, said, “This recognition at an international level is a testament to the hardwork and innovative spirit of our faculty and residents. We are committed to fostering an environment of research and excellence that drives forward the future of medicine.”
