The closure of the Domoria railway underbridge (RUB) is giving traffic blues to the people commuting in this part of the city. The RUB is a crucial underpass which connects the old city to the Civil Lines area.

The closure of the RUB due to its upgrade work has increased the traffic load at the already congested Mata Rani Chowk and Clock Tower. The rush on the Lakkar overbridge has increased manifold as vehicles going towards the Domoria RUB are now taking the route. Making things worse are commuters who are driving on wrong side on the Lakkar overbridge.

Satish Kumar, who works at a bank located near Mata Rani Chowk, said it took him an hour to reach his office as there was traffic congestion and to make things worse, people were driving on wrong side on the Lakkar overbridge.

“I came to the AC market for shopping but there was a huge traffic mess. The area is generally congested but now, things have become worse after the closure of the Domoria RUB. The traffic has gone haywire and the people are taking wrong routes. The traffic police should depute personnel to check wrong-side driving on the Lakkar overbridge,” said Ashima, a visitor at the AC market.

“It is always difficult to come on this side of the city and with the closure of the Domoria RUB, I will avoid coming to the area unless it is important,” said Jaskirat, a city resident.

Meanwhile, shops located near the Domoria RUB are fearing losses as the people will avoid coming to the place.

“We understand that development is necessary but my only concern is that the project should be completed in stipulated time. Business will definitely go down due to the closure,” said a shopkeeper.

Huge traffic snarls can be seen around Bhadaur House, Mata Rani Chowk, Clock Tower and the Jagraon bridge as the people are adopting alternative routes to reach their destinations.

The Domoria RUB has been closed for three months as the railway authorities have initiated the track-doubling work here on Monday. The work on the bridge is a part of the line doubling project between Ludhiana and Mullanpur.
