Civic body begins GIS, GPS mapping of trees
The Municipal Corporation (MC) has started comprehensive GIS and GPS mapping and quantitative analysis of trees under its jurisdiction. A tender has also been floated for the same and mapping is being carried out on the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
A tree census has also been ordered by a joint committee, which was formed to check encroachments over green belts. The mapping will help in checking the illegal cutting of the trees and tracking their GPS location. The MC will have a record of the trees in the city and if anybody tries to cut or harm them, the civic body will easily get information about the same.
Though the Forest Department has record of the trees, MC lacks record of the existing trees, including new ones.
An official from the corporation said the MC lacks adequate staff in the horticulture wing due to which the tree counting process could not be carried out.
The NGT had ordered the civic body to conduct the Census and also share information regarding parks on social media.
Officials told to speed up devp works, act against illegal constructions
Ludhiana South MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal conducted a meeting with officials of different branches of the MC on Thursday and directed them to expedite pending and proposed development works in the constituency.
Further directions were also issued to ensure cleanliness and take strict action against illegal constructions, especially illegal colonies and labour quarters.
The meeting was held at MC's Zone C office on Gill Road. MC Joint Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, Executive Engineer Ranbir Singh and Executive Engineer Manjitinder Singh Johal were among those others present.
MLA Chhina also directed the officials to ensure potable water supply in all areas of the constituency and the works of installing new tube wells in different areas of the segment should be expedited, so that residents should not face any trouble. Also, directions were issued to expedite the work of establishing vending zones in the constituency.
