City cricketer selected for series against Australian Universities team
Deepin Chitkara of Ludhiana has been selected to represent the Indian Universities cricket team for the series against the Australian Universities team, scheduled to be held from November 25 to December 6 at Mumbai and Bhubaneswar, marking a significant milestone in his cricketing career. Five T20 matches and one One-Day Limited Overs match will be orgainsed by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) during this series.
Deepin, a student of BA final year at the Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, has been selected for the upcoming series on the basis of his outstanding performance in the North Zone Inter-Universities Cricket Tournament and then the All India One-Day Cricket Tournament for the Vizzy Trophy Championship, played at Sunder Nagar (Himachal Pradesh) and Guwahati, Assam, respectively.
An all-rounder, Deepin, right hand batsman and right arm spinner captained his university team in the tournament at Sunder Nagar and led from the front to help his side emerge champions in the North Zone Inter-Universities Cricket Tournament. He scored total 199 runs in four matches at an average of 66.33 with striking rate of 228.74 besides taking eight wickets with the economy of 5.38 and became the top scorer. Deepin also bagged the most valuable player award there.
At Guwahati, Deepin played four matches, made 154 runs including an unbeaten century. He was among four players who scored hundred in this tournament. Deepin has been asked to attend a preparatory camp to be held from November 18 to 24 at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar.
Speaking to this correspondent, Deepin said he was overwhelmed and felt honoured to represent India. “It’s a dream come true. I’am eager to perform against Australia’s best university players,” he said.
The Lovely Professional University authorities congratulated Deepin on his selection.
