All schools and anganwadi centres in the state have been covered with the tap water supply, the government has confirmed.

With this, the agrarian state has ranked among eight northern states and union territories, which have achieved 100 per cent coverage of potable water supply to the educational institutions under the Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

At the recent regional conference to review the progress of northern states and UTs, the importance of time-bound completion of ongoing works under the JJM was reiterated so that no one is left out of the mission to provide clean and adequate water supply by 2024. The Secretary, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, Vini Mahajan, told The Tribune, that Punjab has provided clean and adequate water supply to all its 22,389 schools and 22,120 anganwadi centres to achieve the 100 per cent coverage.

Other northern states and UTs, which have achieved 100 per cent coverage, included Haryana by providing tap water supply to all its 12,988 schools and 21,789 anganwadi centres, Himachal Pradesh 17,298 schools and 17,769 anganwadi centres, Jammu and Kashmir 22,421 schools and 23,926 anganwadi centres, Uttarakhand 19,249 schools and 16,473 anganwadi centres, Gujarat 29,754 schools and 42,279 anganwadi centres, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu 411 schools and 369 anganwadi centres, and Goa has covered all its 1,098 schools and 529 anganwadi centres with clean and adequate water supply through taps.

However, three northern states and UTs, including Rajasthan, Ladakh and Maharashtra, have not yet achieved the 100 per cent coverage of its schools and anganwadi centres under the JJM.

While Rajasthan remained the worst performer with 68.54 per cent coverage of schools (59,089 of the total 86,217) and 57.77 per cent anganwadi centres (30,720 of the total 53,179), Ladakh 85.93 per cent coverage of schools (843 of the total 981) and 72.08 per cent anganwadi centres (834 of the total 1,157) and Maharashtra has achieved 91.55 coverage of schools (78,110 of the total 85,317) and 90.69 per cent of anganwadi centres (82,771 of the total 91,267).
