Ludhiana, July 9

The Education Department has assigned the task of planting trees to nearly 10,210 government schools in the state. As many as 929 government schools in the district have been selected to plant 4 lakh saplings on their premises over the next two months.

Ludhiana is the largest district in the state, with some 992 primary and 533 middle, high and secondary schools.

When asked why Ludhiana’s demand for plants was lower than that of smaller districts such as Ferozepur and Patiala, the DEO stated that only primary and senior secondary schools had the space required under the plantation drive.

A teacher at Government Primary School, Sunet, stated that the school did not have any land available for planting trees. “The government should make efforts to provide a plot of land to our school so that our students can enjoy and learn from the green surroundings,” said another teacher.

It is worth noting that Ferozepur district has asked for the most plants. There, 770 schools will receive 35,466 plants, while 863 schools in Patiala will receive 31,822 plants. Malerkotla is demanding a minimum of 4,438 plants for its 84 government schools. The saplings will also include fruit trees.
