Sejal Shah is a producerof the Netflix series Decoupled, which has been hailed by the audience in India and across borders since its release on December 17. A production house, Bombay Fables had previously made a film Serious Men, their debut project, which went on to earn an Emmy nomination.

Says Sejal, “We are a writers’ company. We always goby their vision.” Aformer journalist, Sejal calls Bombay Fables a boutique production company that she co-founded with National-award winning writer Bhavesh Mandalia, and partner Gaurav Shukla.

Sejal credits OTT platforms for believing in their concepts and helping them bring some unique stories to the viewers. She adds, “Netflix believed in our ideas and Serious Men is the product of that. Also Sudhir Mishra sir, who directed Serious Men, had faith in our idea. Same goes with R Madhavan, who we were pretty sure would say no to Decoupled but he liked it and was ready to shoot with us. If not R Madhavan, nobody else could have done justice to the series. Even Surveen did a commendable job.”

Sequel on way?

Ask if a sequel is in the making and she doesn’t deny it, but as far as their work style goes, “We are slow writers, who like to dwell on our ideas a little longer and then finalise scripts.”

On writer Manu Joseph, whose book Serious Men wasmade into a film and is now the creator of Decoupled, Sejal says, “We are fortunate to have come across him. He has a lot more to offer and his ideas are original. He is funny, witty and such a great guy to be around with.” Sejal, who has a team of 11-12 writers in their company, believes in giving them the right to choose how their project should be. “We also make it a point to have our writer on the sets,” she adds.

Shot in Delhi inside a bio-bubble, Decoupled did not suffer many constraints during filming, confirms the producer, who is excited about her upcoming projects. One is AsurSeason 2, whichis releasing next year and there are two more Netflix projects, apart from a movie with Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
