“As an artiste, we wish to explore every genre,” says singer, composer and lyricist Rahul Jain. But at the same time, he continues, “We need an audience to survive. So, if people connect with me when I sing soulful romantic songs, then why not? After doing a few slow numbers for television’s popular shows such as Beyadh, Tu Aashiqui, my YouTube fan base has gone up tremendously. Their wish is my command!”

A journey that started with a reality show, MTV Aloft Star, which led to his Bollywood debut with the song Teri Yaad in the movie Fever in 2016, Rahul doesn’t feel struggle is the right word to sum it up. He says, “Looking back, I can only call my journey a beautiful travel story where the destination has lesser value than the experiences gathered along the way. Achieving it on my own was yet another fulfilling experience.”

It has been three year since he launched his own YouTube channel. The success with the channel makes his resolve of bring more relatable content stronger. During the lockdown, the Beyhadh singer came up with the unplugged version of the same song. His song Meri Maa, released in June, is a tribute to the gharbhejo and khaanachaiye initiatives by Sonu Sood, who helped thousands of migrant workers during the lockdown.

About his latest song, Rahul says that the song will be relatable for the people who have gone through a breakup. “I have kept the theme of the song different from my previous songs. It’s an experiment with R&B and hip-hop. We cracked the tune first and then proceeded with the lyrics, and somehow the song veered into the sad space of heartbreak,” he says.

From the point where his music was rejected out-rightly to now producing songs that are heard by millions, Rahul has no hard feelings about lobbying that goes on in the music industry. He says, “Everybody likes to work with people they know or have worked with already. It’s natural to think of your favourites while making music. To make it to the list of favourites is a struggle that is either long or short depending on your luck and talent. Unlike earlier times, if you are talented, your work will not go waste in this digital age. There’s a space for everyone on internet.”

Rahul has plenty to look forward to. “I definitely miss doing live shows, and that on-stage energy. Now, I am waiting to be back on the road for that kind of experience helps create more good content than being at home. Also, I am eagerly waiting for a movie and a few web series that are scheduled to release soon. One is Salman Khan Productions’ Kaagaz, directed by Satish Kaushik, and the other one is called Saroj Ka Rishta, starring Sanah Kapoor, Shahid’s sister.”

His current song list is filled with Arabic and Danish songs apart from folk music. “When I am bored of everything, I turn back to Bollywood oldies,” says Rahul.
