With reference to the editorial ‘Haryana poll twist’; the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to defer the Assembly elections in the state demonstrates the flexibility of the poll body to address ‘genuine’ concerns of the stakeholders. However, the ECI has laid itself open to criticism from Opposition parties by fulfilling the demand of the BJP and the Indian National Lok Dal. The poll body has been rightly slammed for its failure to do enough groundwork before finalising the poll date. While it remains to be seen if the parties that had sought postponement will benefit from the move, the ECI will likely be accused of partisanship.

Expedite delivery of justice

With reference to the news report ‘Prez: Generation passes awaiting rape case verdicts, end adjournment culture’; President Droupadi Murmu has rightly observed that perpetrators often roam around freely after committing heinous crimes while the victims live in a state of fear. Besides, poor and lower middle-class people don’t always have the means to pursue justice. Most of them cannot afford the rigmarole and expenses involved in the judicial process. Thanks to the widespread adjournment culture in our country, court cases drag on for decades. There is a need to overhaul the system and expedite the delivery of justice.

Tackle the surge in suicides

The frightening surge in student suicides must prompt the government to address the crisis on priority as young lives are at stake. Parents tend to force their own choice of stream or course on their wards, hurting their morale. Youngsters are often shoved into the rat race to secure a seat at a reputable educational institution and bag a well-paying job. And the failure to live up to their parents’ expectations pushes them into a state of despair. And then there is peer pressure, something that many impressionable young people find hard to deal with. It is high time that the authorities concerned took steps to create more employment opportunities.

Life is never beyond hope

Fresh cases of suicide are being reported every day. People struggling from mental health problems must understand that killing oneself is not the solution to any problem. Instead, they must have faith in themselves and soldier on. Those suffering from mental stress must not hesitate to share their worries with their friends and family members. Any problem in life is meant to be overcome. Before considering ending one’s life, one must understand that just like it is a sin to kill someone else, it is also a sin to kill oneself.

Vinesh must talk sense into tillers

Refer to the news report ‘Your daughter stands with you: Vinesh joins farmers at Shambhu’; the ace wrestler belongs to a family of farmers. So, her concern for the community is understandable. But she must not turn a blind eye to the inconvenience caused to the public by the protesters blocking roads. Tractor trailers belong in farmlands, not at a protest site. Farmers don’t have to take to the streets to have their voices heard. Blocking roads and rail tracks only adds to the plight of commuters and travellers. The decorated grappler is not wrong to join the farmers’ stir. But she will do well to dissuade them from causing blockades and traffic jams.

Govt must rein in corruption

There is no doubt that the Narendra Modi-led Central Government is focused on building world-class infrastructure in the country and ensuring better facilities for the masses. But it must take a serious view of corruption in the system that allows incompetent contractors to bag key government projects. From crumbling bridges and highways to water leakage in the new Parliament building and the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Maharashtra, there are instances galore of shoddy construction work. It is a pity that corruption has become the order of the day. Strict action must be taken against those found guilty of graft and favouritism.
