“Maaai hai toh sab kuch mumkin hai”, Sheetal Devi, India’s archery sensation said at Paralympics 2024 in Paris after winning the bronze medal. Her achievement has inspired many across the world.

Sheetal was born with phocomelia, a congenital anomaly which left her armless. But her passion for archery, tireless practice, motivation by her mother Shakti Devi and support by her coach Abhilasha, saw her reach the pinnacle of her sport. Her story holds several lessons for youngsters who feel overwhelmed by difficulties and are ready to give up on their ambitions and dreams.

Conviction and belief in one’s abilities

In spite of her limitations she did not lose focus and belief in herself and kept pushing herself to become better and better in her field. To take up archery in spite of not having arms and to use bow and arrow and aim for the bull’s eye, was not an easy goal that she set for herself. But it was her conviction that made a near impossible task possible.

Be tenacious

To face the challenges of life and to reach the podium one needs to be tenacious, focused and extremely diligent in making an effort as the quote goes “To give your best is to receive the best”. The best way to reach the pinnacle is self-realisation, work to achieve one’s goals, convert dreams into reality and never giving up in any situation.

Key points for students

Believe in yourself and keep trying with the odds, instead of seeing failure as the end, view it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Success does not come from what walk of life you come from, but the walk you take is what defines the future. Kudos to Sheetal for never ever giving up on her dreams and goals!
