Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa has called for an amicable solution to the ongoing border dispute between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, particularly concerning the areas of Shinku La and Sarchu in the Lahaul and Spiti district, through dialogue. The appeal comes after Haneefa recently visited a disputed border site at Shinku La following concerns raised by residents of the Zanskar valley in Ladakh.

During the visit to Zanskar subdivision, Haneefa had assessed the boundary issue and assured local residents that he would bring their concerns to the notice of the higher authorities. He urged both communities and governments to avoid any provocative action until the boundary dispute was resolved. “We aim for cordial relations with our neighboring states and wish to settle this border dispute through dialogue,” he said. He added that while Ladakh would not permit encroachment on its territory, it would also not encroach upon the land of a neighbouring state.

The border dispute has been a contentious issue since 2014. Residents of Lahaul and Spiti say people of Ladakh have intruded into Himachal’s territory, particularly along the Darcha-Shinkula-Padum road and the Manali-Leh highway at Sarchu. They allege that Leh youths associated with the tourism industry have set up camping sites and have intruded 17 km into Himachal’s territory near Sarchu.

Both sides have exchanged accusations over encroachments, particularly at Shinku La, creating a tense atmosphere among residents. Haneefa’s recent statement is seen as an attempt to mitigate rising tensions and foster dialogue.
