Showing a rare gesture, the family members of a brain dead patient in Jalandhar have offered to donate both his kidneys to a patient at Shrimann Hospital, a private medical institution here.

Baldev Singh (70) of Kamalpur village in Shahkot was recently hit by a two-wheeler and sustained head injuries. He was admitted to the Shrimann Hospital, where the doctors had declared him brain dead. A team of doctors from PGI, Chandigarh, including Dr Navdeep Bansal, Transplant Coordinator, told the family about organ donation.

As the family agreed for the same, all official formalities and due procedures for undertaking dialysis were initiated by a committee, comprising Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal and forensic expert Dr Mayank. Both kidneys of Baldev Singh were transplanted to a patient, who had been undergoing dialysis for the past many years.

The whole procedure was handled by a team of doctors, including Dr Shubha Sharma, Dr Jaspreet Kaur, Dr Tushar Arora, Dr Sahil and Dr Shweta Bhardwaj, assisted by Poonam Kondal and Manpreet Raju.

Dr Rajiv Bhatia, Director and Urologist, Shrimann Hospital, said Baldev Singh’s family’s noble gesture had set a new example in Jalandhar.
