Khadi Ashram celebrates 100 years of Charkha Sangh
Khadi Ashram, Chandigarh, marked the centenary of the Charkha Sangh with celebrations held at its Khadi showroom in Sector 17. Rachna Verma, wife of UT Adviser Rajiv Verma, was the chief guest.
Khadi Gram Institution secretary Sanjay Kumar Sharma welcomed Rachna and other dignitaries, including Prof Manish Sharma from Panjab University, Rajiv Tewari, Director, Public Relations, UT, and Dr Aarti Verma, a senior Ayurvedic physician with Ayush.
During her visit to the Khadi showroom, Rachna commended the artisans for their hard work and extended her best wishes for the noble cause. She highlighted the growing presence of Khadi in India’s fashion industry, noting its sustainability and the support it provided to local craftsmen.
Prof Sharma spoke on the significance of the Charkha Sangh, founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1925. He explained its role in promoting economic self-reliance and empowerment, emphasising the spinning wheel as a symbol of dignity and resistance against colonial goods. He also addressed how the sangh fostered local production and provided employment opportunities to marginalised communities.
Tewari urged for more live demonstrations on Khadi use to motivate artisans and promote the self-sufficiency model envisioned by Gandhi. The event concluded with Sanjay Sharma expressing gratitude to all attendees.
