Karnal cops book commuters for changing lanes without signal

In a bid to discourage dangerous driving that contributes to road accidents and traffic congestion, the Karnal police have started a rigorous crackdown, as part of which they are registering FIRs against commuters who change lanes without giving proper signals while driving.

In the past one week, the police have registered 15 FIRs against drivers who changed lanes without giving signals, a behaviour deemed hazardous and directly linked to road accidents. Previously, the police merely imposed fines on individuals engaging in such violations.

Shashank Kumar Sawan, Superintendent of Police (SP), stated, “The act of changing lanes without giving signals is a major contributor to road accidents. To instil a sense of responsibility among motorists, we have commenced the registration of FIRs against such violators under Sections 279, 283 and 336 of the IPC. I have formed teams to monitor such violations, particularly on the NH-44.”

Sawan said the registration of FIRs would play a crucial role in enhancing road safety. Providing context, he mentioned that in 2023 alone, the Karnal police had issued 18,232 challans, amounting to Rs 1,49,18200, to commuters who violated lane-changing driving rules.

He said the police had been actively engaged in raising awareness about lane-changing driving rules among commuters.
