The Kangra Valley Railway, once the pride of Himachal Pradesh and a lifeline for locals and tourists, is in a state of disrepair due to government apathy. This historic route, connecting Pathankot with Jogindernagar, now operates only two trains between Baijnath and Kangra. Locals are demanding its extension up to the Nurpur road (Jassur), but railway authorities remain unresponsive.

A lifeline for locals and tourists is in a state of disrepair

Repeated attempts to contact the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Ferozepur have failed, while the Head Technical officer has refused to comment. Officials blame delays on landslides that damaged the National Highway (NH). However, locals report that the NH authorities have cleared the debris, leaving no excuse for the prolonged suspension of services since June 2023.

Retired government servant PC Vishwakarma, who has been advocating for the railway’s revival, expressed frustration over its deteriorating condition. He noted that disruptions on this track have been frequent since 2014, particularly during monsoons, with the final breakdown occurring in June 2023.

The Kangra Valley Railway, operational since 1929, is a vital and economical mode of transportation, connecting key locations like Jawali, Guler, Jawalamukhi, Kangra, Nagrota Bagwan, Palampur, Baijnath and Jogindernagar. Known as the Kangra Toy Train, it has historically been a preferred choice for commuters. However, its prolonged suspension has caused significant inconvenience to residents who heavily rely on it.

Frustrated locals are urging Members of Parliament to raise the issue in Parliament, demanding immediate action to revive this heritage railway. They blame railway authorities for their indifferent attitude towards the upkeep of this historic hill track, a legacy of British engineering. The situation calls for urgent attention to restore this critical service to its former glory.
