The ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) is planning to develop Junga, a picturesque village located about 25 km from the state capital, as a potato seed village. To implement this initiative, the institute will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with local farmers.

This initiative aims to ensure an adequate supply of quality potato seeds for farmers in Junga and the adjoining panchayats, addressing a critical challenge faced by the local farming community.

Recently, the CPRI organised a workshop and equipment distribution programme in Junga, during which farmers expressed their desire to transform the village into a hub for potato seed production. They also highlighted the adverse impact of seed shortages on potato cultivation in the region.

Dr Brijesh Singh, Director of CPRI, Shimla, confirmed that the institute plans to provide breeder seeds to Junga farmers in the upcoming season. “With these seeds, farmers will be able to produce their own seeds for future use and even share them with other farmers,” he said. “All farming activities will be carried out under the guidance of CPRI experts,” he added.

Dr Singh also announced that CPRI officials will visit Pujarli village on December 18 to conduct another workshop. During the event, the institute will distribute farming equipment to tribal and Scheduled Caste farmers.
