Woman among two killed in accidents

Two persons, including a woman, were killed and two more were seriously injured in two separate road accidents that took place since last night on Garhshankar-Nangal Road. The police have registered FIRs and arrested a truck driver.

In the first accident, around 8:30 pm yesterday, a speeding truck loaded with straw, hit a car and dragged it for about a 100 metre. The car was damaged in the accident and car driver Niranjan Singh of Khuralgarh died on the spot. Darshan Singh of Khuralgarh and Bikramjit Singh, who were in the car, were seriously injured. They were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Garhshankar.

The truck driver tried to flee the spot but people chased and caught the driver and handed him over to the police. The police have registered a case against truck driver Sarwan Singh of village Ratol, Zira, Ferozepur, under Sections 105, 281, 125, 324 (4), BNS. The police got the post-mortem of the deceased Niranjan Singh done and handed over the body to the heirs today.

Niranjan Singh (55) used to work in a liquor yard in Majari village on the Himachal border. He was going to attend a marriage function with Darshan Singh and Vikramjit Singh when the truck hit the car from the front.

In the second accident that occurred this afternoon, a truck hit a woman going on foot in Garhshankar. The tyre of the truck crushed the woman and she died on the spot. The woman was identified as Sarabjit Kaur, wife of Mohan Singh, a resident of village Bhammian. Deceased Sarabjit Kaur was returning to the village after taking pension from a co-operative bank in Garhshankar. Police have taken the body in custody and kept it in the mortuary in the Civil Hospital.

SHO, Baljinder Singh Malli, said in both accidents, both trucks had been impounded and the drivers had been arrested.
