Suffering from spinal injury, Gurdeep Baba bags shotput medal
The recently held Khedan Watan Punjab Dian highlighted several players who are suffering from one or other disabilities but despite that they won medals and showcased their talent. On December 3, International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed.
Gurdeep Baba (51), a coach with the sports school, recently won a silver medal in shotput in Ludhiana where the state-level Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan concluded. Baba suffered a spinal injury in 1998 and has been suffering since then. He was in Germany and had won a silver medal in javelin throw. He was returning when he met with an accident.
“When I fell down, I remained as it is for two hours and could only move my neck. I underwent two-month treatment in Germany and then only returned. I was told that I would be able to either move my upper or lower body, but it was my perseverance that today I am giving training in a government sports school and I also took part in the games and won a medal,” he said.
Not only Gurdeep Baba, but his students, who have been getting trained under him, also won medals in the state-level games.
In the recently held 13th National Junior and Sub-Junior Para Athletics Meet, one of Gurdeep’s students, visually impaired Lakkshvir Singh, won a bronze medal.
The victory brought a confidence and positivity in him. In Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan too, he won a medal in shot-put.
