Jalandhar, August 29

In an operation carried out to nab drug smugglers yesterday at Lajpat Nagar, the police have apprehended a notorious drug smuggler Naveen Kumar, alias Kaka, a resident of Ali Mohalla.

Two other suspects, Vikram alias Nihang Baba and Kali, managed to flee the scene. All three are allegedly members of the infamous Kannu Gujjar gang and were reportedly in the area to deliver a drug consignment.

The operation was led by the CIA staff and was based on the precise intelligence. As the police closed in on the suspects, who were in a car and a scooter, the situation escalated.

A CCTV footage gone viral shows Vikram, dressed in a blue T-shirt, sprinting through the streets with officers in civvies chasing them.

The chase quickly turned violent, with three rounds of gunfire exchanged between the officers and the smugglers.

As per information, the police were tracking the suspects the moment they entered the city yesterday.

However, as they neared Lajpat Nagar, the smugglers grew suspicious of being followed and opened fire, prompting the police to return it. Naveen Kumar was captured, but Vikram and Kali managed to flee.

Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma confirmed that the smugglers were believed to be linked with a Pakistan-based drug network and were in the city to deliver a heroin consignment. He said 1kg of heroin was also recovered from the accused.

While the police are conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspects, they are withholding further details to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Police officials said they were interrogating Naveen Kumar in an effort to uncover more information about the drug network.

“As the operation progresses and more arrests are made, additional details will be shared”, they added.
