Seminar dwells on harmful effects of stubble burning

In an effort to curb stubble burning, the Straw Burning Initiative (SFI) in Phagwara has set a new benchmark, according to Dr Vijay Chaudhary, an agricultural scientist associated with the Gagan Cooperative Society.

During a seminar in Pathankot, Dr Chaudhary discussed the harmful effects of stubble burning, especially in rural areas. He emphasised the damage it caused to the environment.

To tackle this issue, incentives have been offered to farmers who adopt sustainable practices instead of burning their stubble. The programme provides up to Rs 2,500 for farmers who avoid burning, with more significant amounts — up to Rs 5,000 — offered to those who use specialised machinery, he said.

In severe cases, fines of up to Rs 15,000 have been imposed. Additionally, two dedicated task forces have been deployed to monitor compliance and encourage farmers to adopt cleaner methods.
