School notes: Workshop on compost-making
Jalandhar: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya organised a workshop on two topics – ‘Preparing for your future: A journey towards zero-waste and permaculture living’ and ‘Compost making, waste segregation and achieving zero-waste through innovative low-cost teaching aids’. The workshop was organised under a research project granted by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to Dr Pardeep Arora (PI) and Dr Harpreet Kaur (Co-PI), the faculty of KMV on the topic ‘Developing Low-cost Teaching Aids in Promoting Sustainable Waste Management: Swachh Bharat Paradigms’. Jyotsna Jain participated as a keynote speaker in the workshop. She delivered an insightful presentation on the principles of permaculture and the concept of zero-waste. She provided practical examples and strategies for reducing waste in daily life, encouraging attendees to rethink their consumption habits and embrace more sustainable alternatives. More than 500 students from Sanskriti KMV School participated in the workshop.
Teacher’s Day function held
Jalandhar: The management of Anand Public Senior Secondary School, Kapurthala, celebrated Teacher’s Day. A grand ceremony was organised featuring a vibrant cultural programme presented by the staff members showcasing their talents through music, dance and skits. A sumptuous party and cake-cutting ceremony was held, where teachers were treated to a delightful afternoon of warmth and appreciation. “Our teachers are the pillars of our education system, and we are grateful for their tireless efforts,” said Principal Dr AS Sekhon.
Grandparents’ Day observed
Jalandhar: Grandparents Day was celebrated with fervour at MGN Pre-Primary School, Adarsh Nagar. Grandparents were welcomed with brooches, made by the students of Nursery. The programme began with a ‘paath’ and prayer and was followed by various performances by sections of Nursery. The joy and happiness was evident on each grandparents’ face as they saw their grandkids present dances on songs such as ‘Daadaji Papa ke Papa’, ‘Aao Bacho Tumhe Dikhayain’ and ‘Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai’. The grand finale was a bhangra performance. Principal Kanwaljeet Singh Randhawa addressed the gathering and urged all the grandparents to be more participative in their grandchildren’s upbringing. Headmistress Sangeeta and pre- primary incharge Sukham thanked the guests for making the day special.
National Nutrition Week observed
Jalandhar: The Zoology Department of HMV College celebrated National Nutrition Week from September 1 to 7. This week-long celebration aimed to raise awareness about the significance of nutrition, promote healthy eating habits and to enhance understanding of balanced diets and their critical role in maintaining overall health. The week began with a Power Point presentation competition where participants showcased their knowledge and creativity on various topics related to nutrition. The topics included ‘Balanced Diet for a Healthy Lifestyle’, ‘Importance of Micronutrients’, ‘Sustainable Eating’ and ‘Nutrition and Mental Health’. A seminar on ‘The Importance of a Balanced Diet’ was conducted on the following day by Dr Ranjana, a renowned nutritionist and health expert working as chief dietician in Jalandhar. The dietician stressed on the importance of portion control, the inclusion of a variety of food groups and the benefits of a plant-based diet.
Workshop on plastic use
Jalandhar: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya organised a workshop on two topics ‘Single-Use Plastic Must Go’ and ‘Swag of India: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. The workshop was organised under a research project granted by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Government of India. The faculty of KMV had been working on the issue: ‘Developing Low Cost Teaching Aids in Promoting Sustainable Waste Management: Swachh Bharat Paradigms’. Dr Navneet Bhullar was the keynote speaker at the workshop. She is a doctor, a writer and the founder of APAAR, an NGO. Wing Commander Puneet Sharma (retd) participated in the workshop online as the keynote speaker for the second session. Principal Atima Sharma Dwivedi urged all the attendees to strengthen their resolve towards a clean and new India.
Montessori Exhibition
Jalandhar: Eklavya School organised a ‘Montessori Mela’ on campus, where the students of Kindergarten showcased their skills, using the Montessori material. There was a colourful rainbow of Montessori aids —pink tower, brown stairs, spindle box, number rods, cylindrical blocks, red rods, puzzles, flash cards, soft and hard cut-outs of different mathematical shapes. Nursery students showed their creativity by solving different puzzles which helped enhance their general knowledge and visual discrimination. The students made a maze with red rods and learned to count with ‘ganit mala’. Students of the primary wing gave a presentation on topics such as hydraulic lift, water cycle, human heart, global warming, human eye, lungs, kidney, fire alarm etc. Principal Komal Arora and administrator Dimple Malhotra appreciated the efforts of the children.
