Jalandhar, April 18

The rural police claimed to have solved the firing incident that took place on Saturday near the Puranpur Gate at Talhan in which an 18-year-old was shot at by three youths.

The police on Monday claimed that they have busted two groups involved in armed dacoity, extortion, murder and highway robbery. They said they have arrested four persons of these two gangs and recovered three country-made weapons and two vehicles.

Swapan Sharma, SSP, Jalandhar Rural, said these gangs have been active since the last two years and operated in the general area of Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Firozpur, Ludhiana, Patiala and Nawanshahr. He said prompt action by the SHO led to the arrest of all three persons within 48 hours who were involved in the firing at Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was shot in the leg while he was driving a motorcycle along with his brother at Talhan on Saturday.

All three accused, namely Sahil, Avtar and Jatin, are in the age group of 18-20 years. They have several cases of armed robbery registered against them in the districts Jalandhar and Faridkot.

Recently in another case, a Creta car was snatched by three armed robbers near Goraya on April 10, and on the same day this gang executed several snatchings in the same area. The kingpin of this gang, Ajmer Singh, has also been apprehended. Ajmer has 35 cases of murder, extortion and armed robbery registered against him in all districts surrounding Jalandhar. A country-made weapon and the Creta car has been recovered from him.

“With the arrest of members these two gangs, the organised crime in the area will come to a standstill,” said SSP, adding that a database is being created on organised gangs involved in criminal activities such as contraband smuggling, extortion and dacoity.
