Police sound red alert in view of festive season, rural polls
The Punjab Police on Friday sounded a red alert across the state in the wake of Dasehra celebrations and panchayat elections. The alert has been sounded on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, who made a surprise visit to Jalandhar to review the arrangements, said security has been beefed up across the state and over 600 hi-tech nakas have been installed to keep vigil on anti-social elements.
He said police personnel deployed at nakas have been asked to conduct extensive checking of all two-wheelers and suspicious vehicles and persons. All inter-state and inter-district boundaries in the state have been sealed, he added.
The Special DGP also took a round of crowded markets in Jalandhar and interacted with the force deployed at nakas. Later, he held a meeting with senior officers in the presence of Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, Swapan Sharma.
While reviewing the security arrangements, Shukla asked the police officers to ensure foolproof security in their jurisdictions. He also asked them to direct all Station House Officers (SHOs) and gazetted officers to remain in the field till the culmination of the festival season.
The CP and SSPs were told to focus on curbing street crime and ensure action against drugs at point of sale as per the directions of DGP Punjab. The officers were asked to carry out crime mapping to identify vulnerable hot spots so that CCTV surveillance and patrolling can be intensified.
The Special DGP also urged the people of Punjab to remain alert and report immediately to the police if they find anything suspicious. “People can inform the police on the helpline number 112,” he said.
