Jalandhar, February 17

In a noble gesture, parents of Jaiveer (14), who died after his throat was slit by Chinese kite string two days ago, have donated his eyes.

Even as both parents are in a state of shock after having lost their son, a resident of Adampur, in such a freak accident, they still managed to set an example for society.

THE CASE

The incident took place when Jaiveer was driving a scooter while his elder brother was riding pillion. They had gone to a post-office after appearing for exam in their school. The kite string slit Jaiveer’s throat and brushed past his brother’s neck from the side. Jaiveer died within minutes on way to hospital, while his brother suffered minor injuries.

“It was the decision of my wife Sonia to donate Jaiveer’s eyes. She said when she saw his body, his eyes were wide open and she felt that he was staring at him continuously. At that time, this sudden thought came to her mind and she took the decision. A team of doctors from Lions’ Eye Donation Society, Hoshiarpur, had reached the spot,” said Satwinder Singh, father of the deceased.

Proud of my wife’s decision

While my son succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon, I could reach back in the evening. When I saw him in a pool of blood, I fell unconscious. My BP had shot up. My wife handled most procedures. I got to know about the eye donation the next day. Now two days after the incident, I am proud of my wife’s decision. Our son is not in this world, but his eyes would light up two lives. Satwinder Singh, father of Jaiveer

Satwinder, who does construction work, said at the time of the incident, he was in Jagraon to attend to his ailing father-in-law.

The Adampur police did not get Jaiveer’s postmortem done. Former SAD MLA Pawan Tinu said: “Postmortem is conducted for every unnatural death. By not getting the postmortem done, the police washed their hands off the episode and tried to find an escape from their responsibility to keep a check on the sale of Chinese kite string”.
