Over 2K cops to remain on toes as farmers, unions to protest on R-Day
Jalandhar, January 25
Over 2,000 police personnel have been deployed for managing security at the Republic Day function tomorrow. They all are expected to remain on toes as various organisations, employee unions and farmers are set to hold demonstrations tomorrow.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema will be at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium tomorrow morning. Massive security arrangements have been made around the stadium and at all intersections leading from his stay tonight at the PAP headquarters to the venue tomorrow and back.
As Cheema arrived in the city a day before, Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma arranged his meeting with various protesting organisations. Members of the Latifpura Rehabilitation Morcha, who too are to lodge a protest tomorrow over no execution of rehabilitation plan for them for over a year, handed over a memorandum to the minister at the PAP headquarters.
Likewise, members of the Cooperative Employees Federation also met the minister today and presented him a memorandum. The unions maintained that they would definitely hold a protest tomorrow, but would not create disturbance at the R-Day function.
Farmers announced various tractor rallies in Jalandhar. In city, farmers would gather on Garha Road near PIMS and hold a tractor rally that would pass through BMC Chowk, DC office, BSF Chowk and culminate at PAP Chowk. Members of BKU Ugrahan would hold tractor rally from Lohian to Nakodar. Kirti Kisan Union would hold tractor march at the Ladowal toll plaza. BKU Rajewal team would hold a rally from Nurmahal to Nakodar.
