According to post-mortem report of Gadvasu, Ludhiana, urea content in the fodder being fed to cows was behind the death of 23 head of cattle at Phagwara. It was disclosed by SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti to mediapersons.

SP Bhatti said the matter was more of lack of knowledge of gaushala members while feeding the cows rather than an intentional act of. She further stated that the roots of fodder contained high level of urea, leading to high nitrate contents in the feed, which resulted in frothy bloating of cows due to respiratory stress. She further read the concluding part of the post-mortem report which stated as under:-

“It was concluded that the primary reason of death was frothy bloat which was aggravated by already present respiratory stress due to pneumonia and high rated cyst in the lungs. All these got more complicated due to presence of nitrate in the fed fodder. The resultant condition which started with frothy bloath ended up with respiration and consequent death due to hypoxy respiratory failure”.
