Mela Ghadri Babeyan Da begins
The 33rd Mela Ghadri Babeyan Da (2024) kicked off today at Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here and would run until November 9. This year’s event, dedicated to “Struggles against Corporatisation and Fascism,” would also explore the Palestinian crisis and environmental issues such as forest, water and land crises in the country. The first day featured a photo and art exhibition, along with a session on books. Tributes were paid to several deceased Punjabi luminaries, including theatrist Kailash Kaur, poet Surjit Patar and singer Kuldeep Jaloor, among others.
The mela is one of the longest traditions in celebrating the sacrifices of Ghadrite martyrs, commemorating the contributions of Punjab’s intellectuals, socialists, farmers and labourers who gave up their lands and lucrative careers abroad for the freedom struggle. This year, the mela would also highlight farmers’ issues, with members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) planning to participate, including women and children from their jathas. A langar would also be organised by farmers during the mela.
A central feature of the event is the customary book fair, with stalls displaying books and literature. Ghadar’s flag, adorned with two crossed swords and red, yellow and green stripes, marks the entrance. Prominent guests include author Arundhati Roy, journalist Probir Purkayastha, academic Apoorvanand and senior lawyer Rajinder Singh Cheema. Arundhati Roy would deliver the keynote address on November 9.
The mela’s schedule includes various competitions, including quizzes, speech, painting and singing contests. Films would also be screened and prominent speakers would share their views. On November 9, former MLA Hardev Singh Arshi would conduct the flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by speeches, folk music and performances. The mela would conclude with a night of plays.
