Safai Karamchari Unions finally started lifting garbage today after two days of strike. They had given an ultimatum to the MC Commissioner to either fulfil their demands or they will not lift waste from the city. With the MC elections nearing, this announcement had put MC in a tight spot. Ashok Bheel, one of the union members, said the MC Commissioner had given assurance that he would take up the matter at a meeting in Chandigarh today.

"After he gave us assurance, the work was resumed today and now we will hold meeting with him on Monday and take next decision after that," Ashok said.

The city was in a mess in the last two days after the unions had stopped lifting garbage. The unions had been demanding the regularisation of the contractual staff and the recruitment of new staff to improve cleanliness of the city.

If garbage lifting stops in the city, it will gain another condemnation from city residents, who will soon be voting to elect their wards councillors. Right now, councillors and MLAs are particular about the civic issues in the city.

Biomining project yet to be completed:

A biomining project worth Rs 32 crore under the Smart City Mission has not yet completed in the city. In 2017, a bio-mining project was planned to manage and process the waste at the Wariana dump.

The city generates over 450 tonne of garbage every day. Now, other small dump sites are filled and lifting takes a hit every now and then. To tackle the problems, a bio-mining project was started under the Smart City project, but it is still not completed.
