Jalandhar West bypoll: Administration’s green initiative for voters
Jalandhar, July 12
The bypoll to the Jalandhar West Assembly constituency was held as “Green Election”, thanks to the efforts of the district administration.
District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Agarwal said during the recently held Lok Sabha elections, some green booths were set up by the administration in the Phillaur Vidhan Sabha constituency. But this time all 181 booths in the entire Jalandhar West constituency were turned into green booths for voting. An estimated 50,000 saplings were distributed to the voters on the day of the polling.
The DC said saplings were delivered from Forest Department nurseries to polling centres by the administration on the day of the election itself to prevent any damage.
Aim to conserve environment
The main purpose of the campaign was to invite people to conserve the environment and take maximum advantage of the monsoon season so that the plants could be nurtured properly. As many as 200 to 350 saplings were supplied to each polling booth and given to voters free of cost after voting.

Dr Agarwal said the administration distributed mainly neem, Arjun, sukhchain, tahli, dharek, jaman and guava saplings. People, who came to cast their vote, showed special interest in guava saplings. He appealed to voters, who got the saplings, to ensure their maintenance so that the preservation of environment could be ensured.
