Jalandhar mandis witness less paddy arrival on day 1 of procurement
Various mandis witnessed less arrival of paddy in the city on Tuesday. It was almost nil at the grain market on the first day of procurement and the hustle bustle of farmers was also missing.
Officials from the Mandi Board said that actual arrival starts from October 8-9, but the announcement of strike by the arhtiyas and labourers is the reason behind less arrival.
The labourers were seen sitting and lying on sacks of paddy.
“Aaj koi jhona nahee aaya (No arrival of paddy was witnessed today).
“There is a strike. That is why no farmer came today with their produce,” Manish Yadav, a labourer from Bihar who has been coming to Punjab during harvesting time, said.
“It is for the first time that we are roaming around idle. Our work normally starts from the first day,” he said.
Kashmiri Lal, President, Arhtiya Association, said that the strike will continue till demands are met.
