Inter-state opium smuggling gang busted in Jalandhar, two held
The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, has busted an inter-state gang involved in opium smuggling.
Commissioner Sharma stated that the police received a tip-off and set up a check-point near Y Point, Bhagat Singh Colony, Jalandhar. During check, a truck (UP25-DT-6590) was spotted approaching from the service lane on the Jalandhar-Amritsar slip road. When police officers signalled the driver to stop, he panicked and attempted to flee.
The police immediately chased the vehicle and apprehended the suspects. The driver was identified as Bablu of Kaimua Sardar Nagar, Bareilly. His accomplice was identified as Akash Kumar, also from Kaimua, Bareilly.
On searching the vehicle, officers found two kg of opium. An FIR was registered under Sections 18-61-85 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Division 1, Jalandhar. “Further investigations are ongoing as we probe the larger network of this inter-state smuggling gang,” said police officials.
