Independent couple in direct contest with AAP in two Phagwara wards
In a surprising turn of events during the Phagwara Municipal Corporation elections, the four major political parties — Congress, BJP, SAD and BSP — have refrained from fielding candidates in two wards, leaving the Independent Sapra couple in a direct contest with AAP.
Davinder Sapra, a well-known real estate dealer and former councillor, is contesting as an Independent candidate from Ward No.12, while his wife Rupali Sapra is contesting from Ward No. 13. Their only opponents in these wards are AAP candidates Seema Rana and Raghbir Kaur, respectively.
This unusual development has raised eyebrows, as the Congress, SAD, BJP and BSP have actively fielded candidates in most of the 50 wards of the Phagwara Municipal Corporation. In contrast, the Sapra couple faces no opposition from these parties, making their battle with AAP a direct showdown.
Meanwhile, the rest of the election in Phagwara has seen triangular contests in most wards, with Congress, BSP, SAD, BJP and AAP candidates locked in fierce contest. A total of 218 candidates are vying for seats in the 50 wards of the corporation.
The absence of candidates from the major parties in Wards 12 and 13 has fuelled speculation about tacit support for the Sapra couple. With the backing of local supporters and their past political experience, the couple aims to give AAP a tough fight in these wards.
