The city police claimed to have busted a gang of snatchers with the arrest of four of its members.

Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said they got a tip-off that a gang of snatchers was active in the city and snatching valuables from people using a machete (daat). After snatching valuables, gang members used to sell these items to unidentified persons.

“Acting on the information, the police carried out checking in the area, resulting in the arrest of the suspects,” he said.

CP Sharma said those arrested had been identified as Raj Kumar, a native of Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh, Gourav, Kunwar Bahadur and Rohit Arora, residents of Jalandhar. A case under Sections 379B(2), 379 and 411 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects at the New Baradari police station.

He said the police recovered 10 stolen mobile phones, a motorcycle without number plate and a machete (Daat) from their possession.

The CP said while Gourav, Kunwar Bahadur and Rohit Arora had no criminal record, five cases were already registered against Raj Kumar at Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar. He said the Police Commissionerate was committed to acting sternly against the violators of law and ensuring severe punishment to them.

One of the suspects has a criminal past

A case under Sections 379B(2), 379 and 411 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects at the New Baradari police station. While Gourav, Kunwar Bahadur and Rohit Arora had no criminal record, five cases were already registered against Raj Kumar at Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar.
