Pushpa Gujral Science City, in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, observed National Mathematics Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The event featured hands-on activities aimed at fostering curiosity and interest in mathematics among students while encouraging them to consider careers in the field. This year’s theme was “Mathematics: The Bridge to Innovation and Progress”.Dr Rajesh Grover, Director of Science City, emphasised the critical role of mathematics in everyday life and scientific advancements. Addressing the audience, he noted that many students develop a fear of math due to challenges in comprehending textbook material. He underscored the importance of informal learning methods to nurture mathematical skills, especially in schoolchildren. He highlighted the contributions of PGSC’s Mathematics Gallery, which is equipped with interactive, hands-on exhibits designed to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills through experiential learning.

The event featured State Awardee Rumani Ahuja as the resource person. Ahuja inspired students with innovative techniques and shortcut methods for solving mathematical problems. She demonstrated the magic of mathematics using origami and showcased how mathematical concepts can be simplified through working models, math kits and games. She urged students to build a strong foundation in basic mathematical concepts, as it is essential for understanding advanced topics more effectively and with greater confidence.

The celebration provided an engaging platform for students to explore mathematics beyond textbooks and highlighted its role as a tool for innovation and progress.
