Except Kohala, no paddy procured in mandis
On Day 2 too, mandis in the region saw less arrival of paddy crop. For a change in Kohala Mandi, some quantity of the crop was procured by Pungrain and Markfed.
No paddy arrived in the main grain market here today. Kashmiri Lal, president of the Arhtiya Association, Jalandhar, said the strike is continuing. “It is because of the strike of arhtiyas and labourers that the paddy arrival is almost negligible,” he said.
Some paddy had arrived till September 26 at the Jalandhar grain market and it was filled in sacks by the labourers then, which are lying there in absence of the procurement.
The similar situation was witnessed in other market committees. Farmers are also avoiding going to mandis with their produce with no assurance whether the crop will be lifted or not.
As per information, the DC has given instructions to officials associated with the mandi board to ensure that the farmers’ produce get procured everywhere.
A labourer Majabul from Bengal said he came to Punjab on September 20. “Since then there is no work. No earnings have been made yet. We are waiting for the crop arrival so that we start getting work,” he said .
