District and Sessions Judge, Kapurthala, Harpal Singh along with Vinita Luthra, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority; Suman Pathak, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kapurthala and Navjit Pal Kaur, Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division), conducted a surprise visit to the Kapurthala Central Jail. The District and Sessions Judge visited barracks in the Central Jail and heard the problems of the convicts and prisoners.

The sessions judge issued directions to the jail administration and District Legal Services Authority, Kapurthala, to ensure free legal services to every needy detainee and prisoner. He said prisoners serving sentence can file appeals in higher courts by taking advantage of free legal aid. The sessions judge said orders have been issued to dispose of custody cases pending in district courts on priority basis.

He issued the necessary guidelines to the jail administration to ensure that detainees and prisoners are able to meet with their family members as per the rules and also that the detainees are present in court on time.

Vinita Luthra, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Kapurthala informed that a free medical check-up camp is being organised on September 27 at the Central Jail. She said teams of doctors from the Health Department will conduct a medical check-up of the detainees and prisoners and give free medicines on the spot. The judges also visited the women’s barracks.

Shamal Jyoti, Superintendent, Central Jail, Kapurthala; Satish Kumar, Superintendent, Sessions Court, Kapurthala; Satpal, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel; Harish Puri, Deputy Legal Aid Defence Counsel, and the jail staff were present on the occasion.
