Cruelty to cow sparks outrage in city
A disturbing incident of animal cruelty has sparked outrage in the city after a video surfaced showing the brutal beating of a cow, which ultimately led to its death.
The video, which went viral on social media, prompted a group of residents, led by Shrist Bakshi of the Animal Protection Foundation, to demand action from the authorities.
In response to the video, Bakshi and a group of residents gathered outside PPR Mall where they staged a protest before heading to the Jamsher police station. The group demanded immediate action against the perpetrators and the owner of the dairy, where the incident allegedly took place.
Their collective efforts led to a complaint being lodged with the police, urging them to investigate the matter and trace the mobile source of the video, which could help identify those responsible.
The complaint, addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, emphasised that the incident could be part of a larger network involved in illegal cow slaughter and beef trading, which is punishable under the Punjab Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955.
Bakshi also pointed to a second video featuring a police officer defending the owner of the dairy, claiming the footage was two-year-old.
Following the complaint, an FIR under Sections 325 of the BNS and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, was registered last night at Police Station Sadar against an unknown person.
“The registration of the FIR marks a crucial first step in seeking justice for the animal, but the fight is far from over. The case is expected to unravel further details about the perpetrators and their links to illegal activities”, Bakshi said.
The residents said the efforts of the Animal Protection Foundation along with the leadership of Abhishek Bakshi, national president of the Shri Gobind Gau Raksha Dal, had been instrumental in bringing the issue to the forefront. “We demand a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for this cruelty are held accountable and that stricter measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future”, they added.
