In contrast to several stalled Smart City projects, Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) is set to become operational soon.

Initially laid in 2018 by former MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh and inaugurated on August 14, 2022, by the then Local Bodies Minister Inderbir Singh Nijjar, the ICCC is set to go live in the next few days.

Sharing project details, MC Commissioner Aditya Uppal said: “Over 1,000 high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed strategically at 180 locations for surveillance and intelligent traffic management system. The system incorporates 142 red light violation detections (RLVD) and an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system at 11 locations”.

Uppal highlighted the features of the project such as automatic traffic count, speed violation detection, adaptive traffic control, public address, variable message display boards, emergency call boxes, air quality sensors, suspect identification and evidence provision for prosecution.

“Installation of automatic traffic classification counters (ATCC) aims at analysing and recording different vehicle types entering the city. Traffic junction lights at nine locations will be dynamically timed based on the queue length of vehicles. Additionally, 25 variable message display (VMD) units will be strategically positioned, serving as a platform for government schemes, emergency messages and revenue generation through advertisements,” he said.

He said public address systems (PAS) had been installed at 25 locations, enabling citizen-authority connectivity and safety announcements, and emergency call boxes (ECB) for public emergencies at places. The main viewing and data centre for the ICCC has been established at the Police Lines.

“A software platform is in being developed to address citizen grievances and service demands on a GIS platform. Integration of data from various MC branches such as sanitation, lights, roads, sewerage, water, and property tax into the ICCC application platform is underway to facilitate informed decision-making and policy formulation,” he said.

Uppal said while the trial phase was going on, the project couldn’t go live in certain locations, including Cantonment and forest areas, due to pending NOCs. Despite this, 90 per cent of the work was complete and the ICCC was scheduled to go live in the next few days.

Shruti Sharma, a resident, while talking to Jalandhar Tribune, expressed hope that it would improve traffic management and curb crime. However, she emphasised the importance of effective policing, civic responsibility and well-maintained roads for the success of the project.
