CMO directs official to probe relief to rail mishap victims
The Punjab Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has asked Kumar Amit, special secretary to the CM, to investigate the issue of non-payment of compensation to the families of rail accident victims that occurred on November 23, 2006, near Nurmahal.
The CMO has e-mailed this message to Dilbag Singh, a resident of Bainpur village and social activist who had mailed the CMO a news report published on November 23, 2024.
Four female students of PTM Arya College, Nurmahal, were killed when their vehicle was hit by a train on the Phillaur-Nurmahal rail section near Gumtala village on November 23, 2006.
The government had announced Rs 5 lakh each for the deceased’s kin and Rs 50,000 for the families of the injured and had handed over Rs 1 lakh to the families of the deceased, and Rs 20,000 to the kin of the seriously injured victims.
Locals say that during the Vidhan Sabha elections, SAD, BJP, Congress and APP leaders promised that the compensation would be paid immediately after their government was formed, but to no avail.
The CMO also directed its follow-up section to keep track of all developments in this regard.
Compensation not fully granted
