Candlelight march at Phillaur in solidarity with Kolkata doc

On a call of the Aurat Mukti Morcha and Ambedkarite Societies, a candlelight march was held on Saturday night across Phillaur town in solidarity with the Kolkata-based trainee doctor who was raped and murdered. The candlelight march ended at Dr Ambedkar Chowk.
The march was led by members of the Aurat Mukti Morcha Sunita, Bibi Hans Kaur, Sanjeev Bhora, Jarnail Phillaur, Parshottam, Tejinder Dhaliwal, Hans Raj and Jaswant Atti.
Government Teachers Union, Jalandhar, leader Karnail demanded that the murderer of the doctor be hanged to death. Leaders said even after 78 years of the country’s independence, the women in the country were not safe.
Kamajit Kaur, Sandeep Kaur, Kamaljeet Bangar, Anju Virdi, Baljit Kaur, Surit Kaur were present. Organisations which lent support to the march included the Dehati Mazdoor Sabha, Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, Nasha Virodhi Sangharsh Committee and Government Teachers Union.
After memorandum to SP, doctors resume work
After the one-day strike on the call of the national unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), doctors of Phagwara resumed work today. The strike was observed over the murder of a young doctor in Kolkata.
The agitating doctors led by IMA Phagwara president Dr Jasjit Singh Virk and secretary Dr Tushar Aggarwal along with Dr S Mahindra, IMA former state president Dr SPS Sooch, Dr Rajan, Dr Balbir Bhardwaj, Dr GB Singh, Dr Sanjeev Saroya and Dr Supreet Virk submitted a memorandum to Phagwara Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti who assured them of their safety.
Dr Virk said the feeling of insecurity among doctors was not a good sign at all. The reports of strike by doctors were also received from Banga, Goraya, Phillaur, Nurmahal, Nakodar, Shahkot, etc.
