Campus notes: Nutrition month celebrated
Jalandhar: The departments of zoology and botany and grievances redressal cell at Lyallpur Khalsa College held a valedictory function to mark the culmination of the National Nutrition Month. The highlight of the event was an expert talk by Dr Surjit Singh, Senior Medical Officer, Jalandhar Civil Hospital, on the topic ‘Nutrition for a healthy heart’. The speaker was welcomed by the principal Jaspal Singh, Jasreen Kaur, Navdeep Kaur and Gagandeep Kaur. The principal said nutrition played a very important role in maintaining a healthy body and mind and exhorted the students to listen and interact with the speaker to gain maximum benefit from the talk. Dr Singh, an expert on preventive healthcare, emphasised the importance of nutrition in maintaining a healthy heart. He highlighted the growing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and emphasised the critical role a balanced diet played in the prevention and management of heart-related diseases. He urged everyone to adopt healthy dietary habits, including consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and good fats while minimising intake of fast food and high salts.
‘Milan-e-Bahaar’ cultural fest held
Jalandhar: Milan-e-Bahaar was organised at Guru Nanak Dev University in Ladhewali. Students and faculty members of various departments joined hands to present a cultural bouquet with great fun and enthusiasm. The function began with lighting of the lamp by Prof Rupum Jagota, Associate Dean (Academic Affairs and Student Welfare); Varinder Singh, head of department of law; Deepkamal Kaur, head of department of computers and electronics; Namarta Joshi, head of department of journalism and mass communication; and organising committee students. During the event, event was a riot of mesmerising performances with Punjabi and Bollywood songs, dances, fashion show, choreography on retro theme. The highlight was also the ramp walk and dance by teachers. There were also dance performances from other regions like Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. The students enjoyed the evening with DJ songs. Food stalls were also put up to cater to the taste buds of the students.
‘LOK VIRASAT’ Fest organised
Jalandhar: ‘Lok Virasat’, a festival of vanishing art forms, was organised at Police DAV Public School with the objective of creating awareness about preserving Punjab's vanishing cultural heritage. The North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), organised the special cultural programme, which showcased Punjab's endangered cultural traditions. The programmes are being organised in every divisional headquarters across India. A shabad was presented by the students of the school at the beginning of the event. Maj Gen Balwinder Singh, INTACH state convener, said it was the collective responsibility of all to save the vanishing culture.
Inter-school sports contest held
Jalandhar: Inter-school sports competition began in the sports complex of St Soldier Group of Institutions. The event was inaugurated by Anil Chopra, the group chairman, and Vice-Chairperson Sangeeta Chopra. International athlete Kunwar Ajay Raj Singh Rana and group college directors, principals released balloons in the air while students held a torch ceremony. A total of 20 teams participated on the first day of the competition, which included basketball, volleyball, kho-kho, badminton. Apart from this, motivational exhibitions were presented by the students.
