Broken Lamma Pind road, dysfunctional streetlights add to commuters’ woes

The deteriorating condition of Lamma Pind Road has become a concern for daily commuters and local residents. The road, which witnesses heavy traffic throughout the day, is teeming with potholes. The uneven surface of the road frequently damages vehicles.

Compounding the issue, streetlights along the road are non-functional, creating unsafe conditions, especially at the night. Reports of snatchings on the road have also surfaced, adding to the distress of those who rely on this route.

Commuters and local business owners alike have expressed frustration over the state of Lamma Pind Road. Rajesh Singh, a daily commuter, described the impact on his vehicle and the constant risk of accidents while driving on the road. “Every time I drive on this road, my vehicle suffers damage due to potholes. Vehicle repairs are expensive. I am always at the risk of getting involved in a serious accident while commuting on the road. There are no streetlights to illuminate the road and help residents drive safely,” he said.

Roadside vendors face challenges with clouds of dust raised by passing vehicles. Vinod Kumar, who has a small stall along the road, shared his ordeal. “The dust is a constant problem. It settles on everything, making it difficult to breathe and affects my business. The poor road condition is impacting not just commuters, but also those who work here,” Kumar said.

Nearby residents and business owners have submitted multiple complaints to the municipal corporation (MC), while urging the authorities to repair the road and streetlights. Despite repeated requests, no action was taken by the civic body in this connection, they claimed.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal visited Hoshiarpur Road today to review the progress of widening and four-laning of Lamma Pind-Jandu Singha Road. He emphasised on the urgent need to complete the 500-metre stretch connecting the city area by relocating electricity poles.

Aggarwal directed officials to ensure that the project was completed before winter, while highlighting the urgency due to the imminent closure of the hot-mix plant.

He said, “After the completion of the road, the traffic movement between Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur will significantly ease and reduce congestion, while offering commuters a direct route without the need to take a detour via Rama Mandi to reach their respective destinations.”

Aggarwal assured residents that he would closely monitor the progress of the project. Any delay in completion of the project would be highly unwarranted, he said.” Officials from the PSPCL, Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the PWD were present during the inspection.
