Phagwara, July 25
Jarnail Nangal, general secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party (SC Wing), along with villagers staged a protest in front of the Phagwara SP office today. The assault on a minor girl and her attempted abduction from Chaheru village sparked the protest.
According to Jarnail Nangal, the daughter of Siraj Ali was tending to her cattle near the Chaheru stream when a group of persons assaulted and attempted to abduct her.
Nangal said despite an FIR being registered at Sadar Police Station, Phagwara, no action had been taken against the guilty. He accused the police of inaction and claimed that the perpetrators had been pressuring the victim’s family for a compromise. This negligence by the police had emboldened the culprits to repeat their action.
The miscreants did not stop harassing the girl even after several months and attempted to abduct the girl yesterday again. This could happen only because of police inaction, alleged Nangal. Now, the victim was undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital, Phagwara.
In protest against the inaction, Nangal and several supporters gathered outside the SP office, demanding immediate justice for the victim and the arrest of the accused. Nangal warned that if the police did not act, they would escalate their agitation.
Those present at the protest included Vijay Pandori, Balraj Bao, Pawan Kumar, Dr Ramesh, Samar Gupta, Sham Sunder, Amarjit Mahmi, Lalit Madan, etc.
The protesters demanded swift action against the culprits. Later the dharna was lifted after the assurance of SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti.
