A day after CM’s meeting, civic body staff get in action mode

A day after CM Bhagwant Mann directed officials to ensure cleanliness in the city and efficient waste management, DC Himanshu Aggarwal and Municipal Commissioner Gautam Jain have got in action mode.

While the DC went to the main dumping site at Wariana and asked officials to submit proposals regarding the purchase of machinery for the bio-mining of 500 metric tonnes of waste getting accumulated at the site daily, the MC Commissioner and Health Officer Shri Krishna went to Model Town and Dakoha areas. They warned residents that they would be challaned if they did not start waste segregation.

MC Joint Commissioner Puneet Sharma and other officials were also present.

At a meeting held at the PAP Complex yesterday, Mann had asked Jalandhar officials to ensure that there were no roadside dumps and waste was disposed of in the right manner.

Meanwhile, the move to start a CNG plant at Bhogpur for handling 70 tonnes of wet waste daily hit a roadblock today, with residents of the area opposing any such move.

Amid the issue of waste management, MC employees have also started demanding the filling of 1,196 posts across Punjab so that the cities could be maintained well. The employee unions have demanded that recruitment, especially for Jalandhar, should be expedited since the CM was going to be there often.

The DC said he had ordered that the bio-mining operations be started soon at the Wariana landfill, adding that the bidding process had received approval from the authorities concerned. The MC would soon begin processing the pick-up of about 500 metric tonnes of waste daily through the bio-mining initiative.
