A 65-year-old man, identified as Om Prakash, lost his life in a horrific road accident on the Kapurthala Highway near Sports College this morning.
Om, a resident of Raj Nagar, Basti Bawa Khel, was riding his two-wheeler when he was struck by a speeding Municipal Corporation tipper truck. The collision proved fatal for Om, who succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
The police have taken custody of the body and sent it to Jalandhar Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The incident occurred outside the Sports College and has sparked outrage among locals. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck crushed Om’s head, leaving him with fatal injuries.
Om’s brother, Ved Prakash, stated that the victim ran a grocery shop at Basti Bawa Khel and had left home to purchase supplies.
He received a call about the accident shortly after around 11.30am and rushed to the scene, only to learn of his brother’s demise. Om is survived by his wife, son, and daughter, the latter two residing abroad.
The police, after arriving nearly 40 minutes later due to jurisdictional issues between two police stations—Basti Bawa Khel and Division No. 2—have seized the Municipal Corporation’s truck and Om’s two-wheeler.
SHO Gurpreet Singh of Police Division No. 2 confirmed that the truck driver fled. Investigations are underway, with the police reviewing CCTV footage to ascertain whose fault it was.
“We are thoroughly checking the CCTV footage and will take appropriate action based on the findings,” said SHO Singh.
Meanwhile, local residents have raised concerns over reckless driving and demanded stricter road safety measures.
